Chicago Flatwater Classic was "Awesome"! ! !

"It was Awesome!" That was the consensus from the group that braved the 200 mile, 3 hour car ride down from Rockford, MI to paddle in the 10th Annual Chicago Flatwater Classic! Powers Outdoors Adventures had 8 paddlers in our group this year, hailing from Rockford and Grand Rapids, MI. The Group had a start time of 11:28am on the perfect day, which was mostly sunny and 64 degrees. All of the paddlers received a POA Support Bag upon finish, a lunch from Goose Island Brewery, and a Flatwater Classic T-shirt. If you want to check out the race results of this 7.25 mile race, they are posted HERE.
Thanks again to the Friends of the Chicago River for putting on such a great event. We are happy to be a part of it, and glad we can do our best to help clean up the Chicago River. If you would like to help donate, please click HERE.

YOLO: You Only Live Once! New SUPs at Staff Party

Powers Outdoors and Powers Outdoors Adventures recently had our end of the summer Staff Party out on Brooks Lake. One of the highlights of the day was the new YOLO Yak SUP. As some of you know SUP stands for Stand Up Paddleboard. Well, keeping in form, YOLO stands for You Only Live Once. This company has a great mantra and some great boards. Another SUP company that the Staff had fun with was Doyle. Doyle boards are great all-around epoxy SUPs. The Yolo Yak and Doyle SUPs are available for sale NOW at any Powers Outdoors locations and you can click HERE to get there!

Thanks to the P.O. and POA Staff for a great summer! Also, thanks to Yolo for acknowledging P.O. as the newest dealer. Click HERE to read more.

More to come,

SUP on the Pine River!

As you all know, this past weekend in Michigan was just a tad bit soggy. Plenty of rain passed through the area, causing some serious flooding in some areas. Don't worry, that didn't stop us from paddling! The Powers PaddleCru hit the Pine River for some SUP action.

SUP, or Stand Up Paddleboarding, is just starting to hit in the Midwest and Michigan. Powers Outdoors and Powers Outdoors Adventures is already out in the field testing out various SUPs and the best flatwater, rivers and just about any interesting place that you can think of to paddle. As you will see from these pictures, even a partially flooded Pine River couldn't hold us back.

Stay tuned for some upcoming paddle trips that will feature SUPs as well as classes and demos to get you up to speed on all that this new paddle discipline has to offer. Also, be sure to stop in to Powers Outdoors and check out the new Yolo Yak SUPs that are hitting the floors next week.

Wine Paddle Almost Full! Labor Day Weekend...Book Today!

Do you like to paddle? Do you like wine? Well then...do we have just the Adventure for you!

Overview: This Adventure is an all experience level day paddle trip that combines flatwater paddling and wine tasting.

Date: Saturday, September 5th, 2009. (arrive at Noon)

Trip Details: Paddle one of the most beautiful chains of lakes that Michigan has to offer. This is a very leisurely paddle, so the trip is open to ALL experience levels, and it is open to kayaks or canoes. We will put in at the Pickeral Lake public access. We will then paddle through the tunnel, over to Emerald Lake, and on to an island in the middle of Sylvan Lake. It will take us approximately 1 hour to reach the Island. Once there, a snack will be provided as will a white wine sampling. This all takes place in ankle to knee deep water, so it will be unlike any wine tasting you have done before! After we have a brief discussion about the wines, we will return to our boats. We will then paddle back to Pickeral Lake, load up the boats, and head back to our base camp. Once we return, we will reveal the white wines that you sampled, explain the region it is from, give you pairings, and price/bottle. Bottles will not be available for sale, but we will give you all of the info needed to purchase. We will then proceed with a red wine tasting. Cheeses and food pairings will be served at the red wine tasting portion. After we finish the red wine tasting portion, this concludes the day trip.

Quick Facts:
- This trip will allow you to paddle some beautiful flatwater
- You will learn about several different kinds of wine
- Total paddle time is approximately 2.5 hours.
- You need to be 21 years old to partake in the Wine Tasting, but not to attend the Adventure.

Trip Costs: Cost is $75 per person for the day paddle.
(Please note that any under the age of 21 years old is welcome on this trip, but they will not be able to participate in the tasting. The price for anyone under 21 is only $50.00. )

Boat Rental: (kayak or canoe) is also available for an additional cost of $25.00.

Trip Directions: For those only doing the day paddle, we will meet at the Newaygo Powers Outdoors Store (27 State Street, Newaygo, MI 49337) between Noon and 12:15pm. You will then follow us out to the base camp for the day. We will park there and provide transportation down to the water. We will be on the lake around 1:00pm. We should be back to base camp around 4:00pm, and wrapping up the presentation around 5:00pm.

TO SIGN UP PLEASE LOG ON TO OUR WEBSITE: http://www.powersadventures.com/ and click on Trips.

Hope to See You ON THE WATER!

Back from Outdoor Retailer 2009

What a trip! P.O.A. headed west to Salt Lake City, UT for our semi-annual Outdoor Retail convention. This show really helps to clue us in on the future of paddlesports and other outdoor clothing and gear. This year, we had a chance to check out some of the latest, greatest, and even some of the prototypes that still need a little work.

Our trip began with the Open Air Demo up in Ogden Canyon, at the Pineview Resevoir. Under a canopy of all blue sky, we hit the water to test out some of the paddle manufacturers new toys. The big hit this year was by far and away Stand Up Paddleboards or SUPs as the industry calls them. SUPs took the demo day by storm, boasting around 5 boards to every kayak or canoe. Some of the company boards that we paddled were Doyle, Surftech, C4 Waterman, Starboard, Native, Naish, Jackson, Tahoe SUP Company, and Imagine just to name a few! You can see from the picture just how many people were out there on SUPs. P.O.A. can't wait to promote this new paddling discipline in the Midwest and Beyond! We have SUP trips and classes coming this fall so stay tuned to http://www.powersadventures.com/ for more!

P.O.A. also got to hang out with the Coleman Repellent Mascot as you can see from the picture above. Be sure to check out his website HERE and get some of this great repellent for your next camping trip!

After we headed down from the Canyon, it was on to the Salt Palace for the convention. Most of the "big guys" were there as usual. Columbia was doning a huge new booth complete with blue LED lighting. Merrell's always impressive "tree booth" was there and some of the other icons like Keen and Teva helped round out the footwear companies. As for paddlesports, Confluence had yet another impressive showing, as did some of the smaller companies that don't sell to those big box stores like Jackson and our friends at Legacy Paddlesports. Notably missing from the show this year was Johnson Outdoors, who owns brands such as Old Town, Extrasport and Necky. Some of the standout sportswear this year was offered by companies like The North Face, Marmot, Smartwool and Ground. All in all, it was a good show and confidence levels were finally back as everyone is looking forward to a successful 2010!

Paddle On,

Salt Lake City...Here We Come!

Yes, it is that time of the year again. The Outdoor Retailer Summer Market kicks off next week in Salt Lake City, UT. This convention is a great way for us to stay ahead of the curve and bring all of the latest trends and craze back to the Mid-West! We will be at the Open Air Demo testing out all of the new Kayaks, Canoes, SUP's and Paddles that won't hit the shelves (if they make production) until Summer 2010. After we put the new gear to the test on the water, we hit the Salt Palace Convention Center for the next few days to work the lines, talk with the reps, and explore all that the Outdoor Industry has to offer.

We will be sure to bring back pictures of all the new items and gear that we will be testing out so that you can stay ahead of the game!

Off to Utah,
P.O.A.

Michigan Paddle Symposium - SUCCESS ! ! !

Thanks to all that attended the 2009 Michigan Paddle Symposium at both Wabasis Lake State Park and Brooks Lake. Also, a special thanks to our volunteers and instructors, to which, we could not pull this off without you!

We had close to 150 attendees this year, making this our largest Symposiuum to date. Kayaks of all shapes and sizes were on display and used for instruction demonstrations. But the hit of the Symposium (aside from the best instruction you can get!) were the paddleboards. Stand up paddleboarding will surely be something gaining in popularity over the next few years. We hope to keep you ahead of the curve so if you have any questions on kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards...don't hesitate to ask!

See you all for the 2010 Symposium Next Year!

-P.O.A.
